Plant Package Gardening Subscription Box

This is a sponsored post by Plant Package. We received a sample of their product and compensation in exchange for our review. All reviews and opinions expressed in this post are based on our personal experience.

We are excited to share our experience with Plant Package with you!  If you want to garden with confidence then this unique company is for you.  Doesn’t it seem like subscription boxes are all the rage right now?  We both subscribe to another box company so when we were asked to check out the Plant Package we didn’t hesitate to tell them to count us in and send us their latest box!

Each box comes with a cute container, 4 fully-grown plants, and everything you need to put your arrangement together…it’s so simple!  And you know, anything simple is right up our alley. ?

We received April’s Easter Egg Hunt box which featured three Proven Winners® Sunsatia® plants in different colors – blood orange, coconut, and lemon, and a Gomphrena Ping Pong plant in white.  Along with the pretty mint green lace scalloped tin that’s perfect for spring.

You also receive their special coconut coir discs, perlite (to help with drainage), slow-release nutrients, and a large plastic bag to mix them together. The coir discs actually become soil! It’s really an ingenious way to ship soil because they’re so light-weight.

Oh, and each box even comes with a fun garden accessory. Our box included a trowel, awesome gardening gloves, and a special soap to scrub the dirt away. Such a nice touch! They even include a fun activity idea with each box that would be great to do with your kids if you have younger children.

Once you receive your box you just follow their easy assembly instructions.  Easy peasy!  The directions were so simple to understand, even if you’ve never put together a container garden.

We put ours together in AnnMarie’s kitchen.  Note to self…next time assemble arrangement outside. Because plants have dirt, you know. ? Actually, the mess wasn’t too bad.

Here are the simple steps we followed:

Step One – Unbox

Plants need fresh air & water out of the box.  We assembled our Plant Package right after we got it, but if you don’t have time when you receive your package, just place the plants in a sunny area until you’re ready to plant.  No worries!

Step Two – Hydrate

Place the all-natural compressed coir discs, perlite & slow release plant nutrients in the re-sealable bag included in the box.  Add warm water and wait for 5 minutes while the magic happens.

We were a little skeptical at first about how well the discs would turn into soil. They were so small and light, and didn’t look at ALL like soil!

One tip: make sure you put your bag in a sink or a large tub before you add the water. Our bag was fine, and didn’t have any leaks, but it’s always easier to avoid a mess than it is to clean it up afterwards. ? Just ask Anne about the time she marinated a few pounds of chicken in her fridge in a plastic bag on the top shelf…

Step Three – Mix & Drain

After the coir discs fully expand we just mixed everything together in the bag. The instructions said to drain any excess water, but all our water was absorbed. It was so cool to see those little discs expand into the potting soil! It’s like dehydrated astronaut food: space-age dirt! ? The re-hydrated soil is so dark and rich looking.

Step Four – Transplant

Next, it’s time to put the plants in your container. Each month, Plant Package chooses a unique container that fits the theme of the kit. The March kit had a cute little black pot, like a pot of gold you’d find at the end of a rainbow!

Add about an inch of the magic soil to the bottom of the container, and then add the plants. The instructions said you could leave the plants in the biodegradable pots, but the results would be better if you removed them.

The pots were very easy to peel away. If you’re assembling your container inside, doing it over the sink makes for much easier cleanup later since some dirt will come out during this process.

Once all the plants are placed, just fill the container with more soil. We ended up having a fair amount of soil left over to use to make other containers in our homes.

Step Five – Display

We kept our plants inside while we were away for spring break. Plant Package selects plants that are hardy, and easy to grow. But they recommend not putting them outside if temperatures are going below 50 degrees F.

One thing we’re learning about plants, they don’t need as much water when they’re inside as you might think. It’s better to underwater them than it is to overwater. Too much water can lead to root rot which will kill the plant very quickly!

We took these pictures with the pretty planter all assembled in AnnMarie’s house. We loved that it was easy to switch up the accessories so that the container was fun for Easter and then transitioned nicely for spring.

Now that it’s warm here in North Carolina, we’ve moved the arrangement outside. It looks great on Anne’s backyard patio!

Our Thoughts about Plant Package

Our plants had a rough journey on their way here and several arrived slightly damaged. We contacted the company and they were quick to replace them for us. Their customer service is really excellent!

It was so simple to assemble our Plant Package arrangement and only took about 15 minutes.  The assembly instructions come with plant care steps to follow afterward. It was helpful to have clear instructions about watering and where to place the container for the best light.

This arrangement is really low maintenance. From what we understand, the company strives to choose plants that are easy to be successful with growing. Anne just needs to water it daily now that it’s outside since it gets hot and dry fast here!

We really liked that Plant Package gives you a variety of options with your subscription. You can choose whether you want to get a new box each month, every other month or quarterly. This would be such a fun gift idea for someone special since it’s a gift that would keep arriving and would last much longer than a traditional floral arrangement. And of course, it would be a great “gift” to yourself. ?
