How to Choose a Curtain Style

Curtains can add style, warmth, and personality to any room but there are so many styles to choose from.
When selecting a design consider the function of the space in your home.
Do you need curtains that will add privacy to a room?
Or do you want curtains to just accent and softly frame the window?
What is the vibe and decor style in your room?
Do you prefer bold patterns or solids?
What color curtains coordinate with the rest of the colors in the room?

Oh and don’t forget about the header type you want for your drapes.
Choose a soft top for a natural look, pleated for a luxurious full look, or grommets for a structured modern look.
Curtain Header Types
- Single Rod Pocket
- Double Rod Pockets
- Back Tab
- Double Pinch Pleat
- Triple Pinch Pleat
- Inverted Box Pleat
- Goblet
- Grommet Top
As you can see, there is a lot to consider when choosing custom curtains so the best advice I can give you is when in doubt go simple.
Choose a classic timeless design that won’t go out of style.

In my dining room, the set of triple windows is recessed in a nook that overlooks our front yard.
This space recently got a makeover with the addition of picture frame molding.
Since I didn’t want to cover up all that beautiful trim work with heavy drapes I chose a simple and classic style.
A sheer linen-inspired panel with a double pinch pleat was the perfect choice for the row of three windows in my room.
How to Measure Your Window for Custom Curtain Panels

You want to ensure that your curtains fit perfectly and enhance the aesthetic of your space.
Before you even think about ordering custom curtains, take precise measurements of your windows.
Use a metal tape measure for accuracy, and measure both the width and height of the window frame.
You’ll need to determine the width of your curtains and in doing that you have to consider the fullness you’d like.
Fullness refers to how much fabric you want your curtains to have when they’re closed.
For a luxurious look, I’d suggest 1.5 to 2 times the width of your window.
Multiply the width of your window by your desired fullness factor to determine the total width of fabric needed.

How to measure the width:
- Measure the width of the window opening from the outside edge of the window casing.
- Add several inches to each side.
- Take the total number (your measured width plus what you added to each side), and divide it by the number of panels you want to order (two panels are most common so you can open them to the sides).

How to measure the length:
- Mark where you will mount your brackets for your curtain rods.
- Use a pencil to mark where you will mount the brackets for your drapery rod.
- Measure down to where you want the curtain to hang (your floor is often where you will measure unless you prefer just below the bottom of the window).
- You will use this measurement as your height when ordering.
Tips & Troubleshooting
- Curtains should be at least 6″ beyond the window frame on either side
- Hang your curtain rod about halfway from the top of the window frame and the ceiling
- Floor-length panels should just touch the floor
- Include the width of the rod when measuring
- Finials will add extra length to your curtain rod

I recommend hanging your curtain panels above the window frame usually about mid-distance from the top of the window frame and your ceiling.
However, with the bay window style of my window that wasn’t the look I wanted for my space.
I chose to install my curtain rod inside the nook of the windows so the drapes wouldn’t cover the molding.
Plus if I hung the curtains above the nook higher on the wall I feel I’d lose the effect of the box bay windows.
Ordering TheHues Custom Window Coverings

When ordering custom curtains there are many factors to consider such as fabric type, style, and budget.
As I mentioned before, choosing the style of drapes for a space depends on the look and feel of the room.
Is it a formal or casual space?
Remember a simple classic style is always your best option if you’re stuck.

I chose a solid color flax texture custom curtain for my dining room.
It was important to me to select a sheer fabric that wouldn’t block the view out of my windows.
Plus the faux linen-inspired look was appealing because they’re machine washable so they’ll be easier to maintain compared to real linen panels.
Our home is a traditional style but with a casual transitional vibe so I chose a double pinch pleat header.

There is a super easy calculator on TheHues website to help you measure your curtains.
- Step 1: Curtain header
- Step 2: Window width
- Step 3: Rod extend length
- Step 4: Drapery rod height
- Step 5: Window height from floor
- Step 6: Panels
- Step 7: Result
All you need to do is follow each step and it calculates the panel sizes you need to order.

What Supplies Will You Need to Hang Curtain Panels

Here is a list of supplies and tools you’ll need to get this easy DIY project done right:
- curtain panels
- curtain rod & hardware
- measuring tape
- pencil
- ladder
- level
- stud finder
- drill
- wall anchors
- iron or steamer
How to Install Brackets and Curtain Rod

Selecting the right curtain rod and hardware is important for the proper installation of your new custom curtains.
Make sure the rod is sturdy enough to support the weight of your curtains.
Once you have all the necessary measurements and hardware, it’s time to hang your curtains.
Use a level to ensure that the rod is straight, and double-check your measurements before securing the hardware.
Most curtain rods usually come with the brackets and screws to hang them on your wall.
However, you may want to consider installing the brackets with wall anchors especially if you’re unable to attach them to a stud behind your drywall.
How to Remove Wrinkles from New Drapes

Take the time to steam or iron out any wrinkles for a polished finish, and enjoy the transformation of your space.
By following these steps, you can measure, order, and hang curtains correctly the first time, saving yourself time, money, and frustration.
With the right approach and attention to detail, you can enhance the beauty and functionality of any room with the perfect curtains.
