My family enjoys going out to eat. It’s something that we do together usually on the weekends. And let’s face it with teens…if you offer them food all of a sudden they want to hang out with you! Am I right?
Many of us feel that you need to cheat when you go out to eat. But you don’t have to feel that way with Trim Healthy Mama. Since following THM I no longer feel like I’m sacrificing when we eat out. I just make better choices to go along with my healthy eating habits. And believe me…I’m generous with myself when I eat out. Maybe too much! Nah! I want to enjoy the experience of dining out. It’s all about balance.

Caprese Salad with Grilled Chicken
Last week I went to lunch with a group of friends that I volunteered with on the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). We tried a new restaurant that had just recently opened. I had a Caprese salad with arugula, tomato, basil & mozzarella and added grilled chicken for some more protein. The salad came with a sweet balsamic reduction. To keep it on plan I just substituted a regular balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Anne and I go out to lunch sometimes to break up our days working from home. We’ve been known to take over a booth in a local restaurant for hours working on the blog. Of course, we leave a good tip for our server on those occasions. I often order a salad with either grilled chicken or a burger. Usually asking for shredded cheese in my salad and a plain burger on top of the salad. On this day my order got a bit mixed up…but it was still yummy none the less.
Quinoa Stuffed Avocado
One of my favorite quick restaurants (besides Chipotle) is Viva Chicken. We don’t have one in our town so if we are running errands or near the mall and need to grab a quick lunch it’s always Viva Chicken. The Quinoa Stuffed Avocado is my favorite, it’s filled with organic quinoa, chicken, red peppers, rocoto mayo & balsamic vinaigrette. I’m not sure exactly how much quinoa is in each serving so this may be an S helper. It’s such a filling meal that sometimes I bring half home for dinner…but not always…depends how hungry I am.
Another newer local restaurant we’ve discovered recently is 90 Novanta Pizzeria. I was hesitant to try this restaurant since pizza is my weakness and I didn’t think I’d find a good substitute that I would enjoy. Boy, was I wrong! Zucchini & squash spaghetti, grape tomato, fire-grilled chicken in a garlic cream sauce. It’s so delicious!
There are always on plan options when eating out. Just make substitutions when needed. I never wanted to ask for changes to the menu…but I got over that since following THM. It’s so easy to enjoy a meal out and stay on plan. And if I don’t have to cook…well that’s always a bonus!
