Simply Pretty | Kitchen Windowsill

Last month I began making some simple changes in my home. I’ve been inspired by AnnMarie to consciously decorate areas that I tended to view as purely functional. I began with some changes to the area next to my kitchen sink. But what about the windowsill? After all, that is what I am staring at for close to an hour each day while preparing food or cleaning up the kitchen!

This is how the area looked when I began this Simply Pretty makeover. The windowsill held a few signs that I received as gifts from some of my closest friends. The aloe plant was in a clay pot that I had in the garage. The other little plant was there because my one cat kept eating it. It’s a fake plant, y’all. My cat is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier… And there were two clay creations my kids had made in art class.

There’s nothing wrong with how the kitchen windowsill looked before, but it was sort of thrown together. Now that we’re approaching fall (although temps are still in the upper 80s here in North Carolina!), I’m beginning to add some fall touches in my home.

I created a simple display that I should be able to update with minor tweaks each season. For fall, I added the little white pumpkins. I’ve moved one of the signs to another part of my kitchen because it felt like there were too many signs in one small space. And I added a photo frame with a clip that will let me easily swap out photos. I love the photo in the frame right now though. It is from my birthday, one of the last evenings we spent all together before my son left for college. My kids have become friends over the past year and that brings me so much joy!

The other little change I made that really helped tie the whole thing together was moving the aloe plant into a white distressed pot instead of the terra cotta one. I found it for $4 on the clearance rack in HomeGoods!

Our kitchen faces west so there’s a lot of sun in the room each afternoon and evening. But I also love how it looks in the morning when the light is a little more subdued.

And there you have it. An area where I spend so much time with a few little changes to make it into a space that is simply pretty.

I have one more change that I am planning for the kitchen sink area. Stay tuned for that update, hopefully next month!
