The calendar might not say it’s summer yet, but the weather around North Carolina didn’t get the memo!

We’ve had temps in the upper 80s and mid-90s for the past week.

Plus humidity.

Fortunately, we both agree we’d much rather sweat than shiver!

We love celebrating summer in the way we decorate our homes, inside and out.

Over the years we’ve discovered our ten favorite ways to add a touch of summer that are easy and affordable.

Ten Easy Ways to Decorate for Summer

There are so many great ways to give your home a fresh, summery feel!

This list is by no means all of them.

But these are the tips we both return to year after year.

Of course, we’ve saved our favorite one for last. You’ll have to let us know which tip you like best in the comment section at the end of the post!

Combine Faux Florals and Fresh Greenery

Have you ever noticed that faux florals sometimes look a little sparse when you arrange them in a vase?

Well, we’ve got an easy solution!

Trim some fresh greenery, like these magnolia leaves, from your yard and tuck it in along with the faux.

You can put a container inside your vase to hold water to keep it fresh.

Want a closer look at that tablescape in the mirror? It’s all part of an afternoon tea party.

Anne cut some hydrangea leaves to fill out this floral bouquet.

She shared all her resources for this botanical tablescape if you want to create a similar look.

White Florals Keep Things Fresh

We know flowers come in so many colors, but we both prefer white flowers when using faux florals this time of year.

The combination of white and green always works with our neutral aesthetic.

Don’t be afraid to cut down floral stems into smaller pieces like Anne did for this basket in her entry.

The faux ferns in this bouquet and allium were also separated and cut down to create this simple arrangement.

You can leave the stems long too!

These pretty white flowers contrast so well with the dark hanging basket in AnnMarie’s entry.

You can think outside the box with faux florals too.

Who says you have to use traditional containers for flowers?!

The beauty of faux is there’s no need for water, so go ahead and tuck them into a hanging bag.

Add Some Patriotic Accents

AnnMarie decorated her foyer for summer with some pretty patriotic details.

You’ll never believe where she found that red pillow!

It’s so easy to add some red, white, and blue with some inexpensive US flags.

Tuck some into a hanging basket.

Or line up some milkglass vases and add some flags to the grouping.

Be sure to vary the heights of the vases and the number of flags to keep it interesting.

A tiered plant stand filled with faux greenery is another great spot for some patriotic details.

Hang a Straw Hat

A straw hat is so summery!

Hang one from the corner of a chair.

Sit one on a side table.

Or hang one from a row of hooks like AnnMarie did in her foyer.

Lots and Lots of Greenery!

Whether you prefer fresh or faux, greenery is the perfect way to give your home a fresh and summery look.

We love the small faux plants and pots from IKEA.

Not only are they inexpensive, they also look pretty realistic!

Anne’s kitties love munching on greenery, but real and faux, so she sticks to faux to avoid possibly poisoning them.

This vintage fishing creel is a fantastic spot for some greenery this summer!

Lemons are the Perfect Summer Accent

Our monthly dinner club gives us the opportunity to create new themed tablescapes every month.

This summer dinner party gets its fresh look thanks to lemons and some large fresh grocery store florals.

Twinkle Lights

No summer outdoor space is complete without some twinkle lights!

AnnMarie shared how she created this amazing look on her patio.

If you think summer temperatures make hanging out outside too uncomfortable, you’ll love what Anne discovered last year!

Summery Pillows

We were recently interviewed by Wayfair and shared some of our tips for creating an outdoor oasis.

One thing we shared is the value of choosing neutral furnishings: they allow you to inexpensively follow decorating trends by adding fresh colors and patterns from one year to the next.

AnnMarie’s colorful striped pillows look great on her pool patio!

If you prefer sticking with a neutral look, you can add a summery feel with a whimsical pattern like Anne used on her front porch.

Display Botanical Dishware

Summery plates are another budget-friendly way to add a seasonal feel to your home.

Whether you display them on a plate rack, in a china cabinet, or on open shelving, you can add some color with dishes.

Check tag sales, thrift shops, and garage sales to build an inexpensive collection of plates.

Don’t Forget some Candle Lanterns!

We love using candle lanterns all year long, but when the weather is warm, we love putting them outside.

They look stylish during the day on a patio.

And you can find candle lanterns in a huge variety of styles!

As night begins to fall, light the candles for added atmosphere.

You can see how Anne’s pool setting looked once night fell with the glow of candles at this dinner party.

Just be careful with candles in the candle lanterns if your temperatures get really hot!

You may want to keep the candles inside on days hotter than 85, or you may discover your candles have melted, even the pricy battery-powered ones…

Lanterns Can Hold More Than Candles!

One year AnnMarie’s lantern toppled over during a storm and one of the glass panels broke.

No worries, though!

Simply remove all the panels and turn that candle lantern into a container for a potted plant.

She shared more ideas for decorating a small porch for summer.
