As Trim Healthy Mamas we naturally think about the food we eat every day. We may wake up hungry and think about what to have for breakfast. Then we may have to pack a lunch for work. Later we plan what we will make for dinner. And let’s not forget those snacks in between our meals. But what about the beverages we drink every day?
Consuming enough water every day is essential for everyone. I always start my day with a large glass of water as soon as I wake up in the morning. I’m one of those rare people left on the planet that doesn’t drink coffee. Haha! And I’ve never needed the caffeine to jump-start my day. I know…I know…I’m weird! Although I don’t like coffee, I used to enjoy a few Diet Cokes in the afternoon or evening before becoming a Trim Healthy Mama (nope the caffeine didn’t affect my sleep). After starting THM, I gave up those daily Diet Cokes and found other things to replace it.
I have several glasses/cups I like to drink from. Call me crazy but there are some beverages I can only drink from certain cups. I’m not sure why…but that’s just the way I am. It does make for lots of dirty cups & glasses every day but I’m okay with that because I don’t mind cleaning my kitchen!
The 4 Drinks I Have Every Day:
1. Good Girl Moonshine
One of the first days I was following the THM plan I tried a Good Girl Moonshine (GGMS). I had read about the benefits of apple cider vinegar (ACV) long before being introduced to this plan so I figured it had to be good. Oh boy…was I wrong! I had thrown in 3 tablespoons of ACV, a teaspoon of ground ginger and some stevia. It was awful! I immediately called Anne who laughed and laughed. Then she explained some things I may have done wrong. First, I used too much ACV. Second, fresh ginger was far better than ground. And third that it would take some time to learn to like this drink. It didn’t take too long for me to find the perfect combination for my GGMS!
AnnMarie’s Favorite GGMS
- 2 tablespoons Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar (accept no substitutes… I’ve tried…I’m loyal to this brand only!)
- 2 tablespoons fresh homemade ginger juice (see recipe below)
- 1 packet of True lime brand watermelon packet
Add ACV, ginger juice and watermelon packet to my 30 oz. stainless steel cup and stir well. Then add lots of ice and fill a cup with water. I love this drink in my “knock-off” Yeti stainless steel cup from Wal-Mart with my metal straws from Amazon. Sometimes I get a bit crazy and have two GGMS in a day! It’s a real thirst quencher!
Here is how I make my fresh ginger juice:
- peel fresh ginger root
- chop in 1″ chunks
- place large handful in Nutribullet or other blender with 1 1/2 cups water & blend well
- strain using handheld mesh strainer
- pour fresh ginger juice into mason jar or my favorite container found here
- keep refrigerated
2. Chocolate Secret Big Boy
I have never been much of a breakfast eater. But since changing the way I eat and following THM I find I’m hungry in the morning. However, I usually don’t have time to cook breakfast and prefer to make something quick that I can take with me in the mornings. A smoothie is the perfect option for me! I enjoy this for breakfast almost daily especially to get those all important veggies in my meal! And since this is all I’m having for my meal I add more water & ice and make it extra-large sized! I drink it fast and usually just straight out of the Nutribullet cup. If I happen to eat something different for breakfast then I will have the Chocolate Secret Big Boy as a snack or dessert.
Chocolate Secret Big Boy Ingredients
- 1 cup of frozen cut okra
- 12 oz. water
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 3 teaspoons THM supersweet blend
- 1 scoop THM collagen
- 2 teaspoons MCT oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 pinches of mineral salt
- 2 cups of ice
- 1/2 scoop THM whey protein powder
Put first 8 ingredients in Nutribullet or other blender. Blend very well! Add ice & protein powder and quickly blend again. The original recipe can be found in the Trim Healthy Mama cookbook.
3. Decaffeinated Iced Tea
We keep a pitcher of this unsweet tea in our refrigerator at all times. Both my husband and I drink this daily but we add different sweetener to our glasses.
- 2 large decaffeinated Lipton tea bags
- 40 oz boiling water
AnnMarie’s Version of Sweet Tea
- 16 oz. decaffeinated tea (see above)
- 3/4 of a doonk stevia (this is my best estimate…it’s not a full scoop with the “doonk” spoon)
- lemon slice
- ice
4. Water
As I said early I drink lots of water throughout the day! I drink a glass of water when I first wake up in the morning. On the mornings I actually get to the gym…I bring a refillable water bottle with me. And I also drink a glass of water with every meal. I just keep my favorite tervis cup on my counter to refill from our fridge often.
