How I Met My Husband and Our Love Story

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Do you go all out or just something simple?

My husband, Chris, and I don’t always do gifts for each other but if we do… it’s something small & meaningful.

We’ve written each other letters, created a list of reasons we love each other, or even made digital photo books.

Sometimes we go out to lunch…never dinner (limited overpriced menu…umm, no thanks!).

During our monthly blog planning meeting, Anne & I thought it would be fun to share our “love stories” with you in honor of Valentine’s Day.

You can read Anne’s love story here.

Every Love Story is Beautiful but Ours is My Favorite

Of course, we all think our love stories are beautiful, and isn’t that the way it should be?!

I think it’s important to remember where our story started, so let me tell you a little bit about my love story.

How I Met My Husband

I met Chris way back in 1989 while we were both students at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.

My friends and I were walking to a party off-campus and a car full of boys pulled up and asked what party we were headed to.

Being naïve girls we told them where we were headed.

Times were certainly different back then!

Or maybe it’s just that I’m a mom now so I’m more aware of the dangers of telling random boys where we were going.

But back then that’s kinda how you met other college students.

Of course, the boys showed up at the party.

Later during the night, Chris and I started talking.

We asked each other what we were studying at school…a typical question you’d ask when getting to know someone in college.

Well…this funny guy told me his major was computer science…but…that he doesn’t wear a pocket protector.

Great…glad he clarified that for me.

Haha!

Kinda dorky…kinda funny & charming!

That was his pickup line!

After a while, his friends were leaving the party so Chris asked me to hold his cup because he wanted to come back & talk to me again.

Back then you would pay $5 for admission to a party and you’d get a cup for the night to drink from the party keg.

Red solo cups were sacred as a poor college kid…you never wanted to lose it or have to pay for another one.

Chris never did come back that night.

Boo hoo!

But he did come to my dorm the next night and we chatted with my friends and his.

After that night, we pretty much spent every day together.

My kids love to hear the story of how we met.

They also really love to tease their dad about his corny pick-up line “I’m a computer science major but I don’t wear a pocket protector”.  lol!

And I’ll always remember holding onto an extra red solo cup for a boy who would become my husband.

How Long Did I Date my Future Husband Before Marriage

Chris and I dated throughout college.

We both look back and think it was so great to be in a relationship during college.

We still had tons of fun with our friends but without the pressure of meeting someone.

Chris and I were committed and pretty serious early on in our relationship.

We talked about our future together often.

And we both of us felt this was the one!

At least I did…maybe I should let Chris tell his version of our love story next Valentine’s Day.  haha!

When Did We Get Engagement and Married

Six months after I graduated college my mom passed away.

It was a really tough time in my life and I’m not sure how I would have gotten through it without Chris by my side.

I think we got even closer then…I certainly depended on him even more…he was my person.

We got engaged the next year and married the following year.

This year we will celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary.

We’ve created a beautiful family and have three amazing children.

Pretty cool for two average kids who met at a college party and are now living happily ever after!

I’ll be celebrating our 29th Valentine’s Day with this handsome guy this year.

I’m a pretty lucky chick!
