This Valentine’s Day trail mix is so easy to customize to suit your crew’s tastes and preferences.

Just pick your color scheme (I went with red, pink, and white), and a flavor profile (I chose chocolate-covered strawberries) and start assembling.

Why Make a Valentine’s Day Snack Mix?

Large glass canister filled with a pink and red snack mix for Valentine's day with a metal scoop.

My love of creating these kinds of snack mixes started over 20 years ago when I mixed up some Monster Munch for my kids’ Halloween party and my neighborhood Bunco group.

The best part about these mixes is you get to control what goes into it.

Want more salty and savory ingredients? Go for it!

Ready to amp up the sweet factor? Try drizzling it with melted white chocolate and Valentine’s sprinkles.

Prefer to keep things a little healthier? Ditch the candy and opt for freeze-dried strawberries and unsweetened cherries.

Whether you choose to keep the snack mix on your counter for your family to munch on all month, or you want to package it up to send to your favorite college student, we’re sharing everything you need to know to make the ultimate Valentine’s snack mix!

Ingredient Ideas for a Valentine’s Snack Mix

Packages of ingredients to include in a Valentine's snack mix.

I had fun putting this sweet and salty snack mix together for Valentine’s Day.

A mix of candy, salty snacks, nuts, and dried fruit gives a variety of textures and flavors.

  • Mini pretzels – I used Valentine’s pretzels shaped in X’s and O’s, but you can use any shape. The small O’s, mini pretzels, and snaps are all great, or you could even use thin pretzel sticks.
  • Cookies – I love using bear-shaped cookies for Valentine’s Day! The chocolate bears are my top pick, but any of the flavors would taste great and look adorable. Frosted animal crackers are another pretty mix-in option.
  • Cereal – If you’re planning to add white chocolate, then Chex-style cereals are a fun addition. I love using strawberry-flavored cereals like strawberry frosted Mini Wheats or very berry Cheerios.
  • Nuts – This is a great way to add some crunch and some salty flavors to your trail mix. Lightly salted peanuts, cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts, or mixed nuts are all great options. You can also use cocoa-dusted almonds. Chocolate-covered nuts are another tasty option! If your family has nut allergies or sensitivities, you can use pepitas, roasted chickpeas, sunflower seeds, or corn nuts.
  • Candy – M&M’s always come through with holiday-themed colors for their candies. The red, pink, and white mix looks so pretty for Valentine’s Day! They even had a white chocolate strawberry milkshake blend that had some bright green ones. I like to use other red and strawberry candies with this mix too like Boston Baked Bean candy, Swedish fish, and jelly hearts.

Here is what I included in this Valentine’s trail mix:

When I make the Valentine’s version of this mix, I lean into the chocolate and strawberry flavor combination.

Other Snack Mix Flavor Combinations to Try

If your family prefers a chocolate/peanut butter flavor combo, skip the fruity ingredients.

Of course, you could still add the strawberry flavors and your mix will almost be like a chocolate, peanut butter, and jelly sandwich!

Quick Tip!

Don’t let the name, Valentine’s Snack Mix, fool you! This fun party mix is easily customizable. Want to make it for Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, or Halloween?

How about for a birthday party or baby shower?

Simply change the colors of the candies you use and whip this up any time of year.

How to Add Melted White Chocolate to the Mix

I don’t add melted white chocolate to my mix because I don’t want to reduce the saltiness of the savory ingredients. There’s a lot of candy in this mix, so I don’t feel the need for it.

If you’re using less candy, or you want to add in Chex cereal or popcorn, then you may want to drizzle your snack mix with white chocolate to help hold it together.

The best white chocolate to use is Ghirardelli’s white chocolate melting wafers.

Follow the package instructions to melt the white chocolate.

Spread your snack mix out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and drizzle the white chocolate over top.

If you want to get extra-Valentine-y, sprinkle these Valentine’s sprinkles over the white chocolate while it’s still wet!

Allow the mix to dry for about 10 to 15 minutes, then break it up and put it in your storage container.

Tips for Storing Valentine’s Trail Snack Mix

How long will this sweet and salty snack mix last?

The answer depends largely on how the snack mix is stored.

For best results, store the snack mix in an airtight glass jar and it will stay fresh for up to two weeks.

You can also store it in a plastic zip-top bag, but the mix won’t stay fresh quite as long.

Ways to Serve a Valentine’s Day Snack Mix

You’ve taken the time to make a fun snack mix, now how do you serve it?

I prefer making this mix if I know I’ll have other people around to eat it with me! This would be so fun to set out at a Galentine’s Day party.

Place it in these cute heart-shaped bowls and set the bowls around the area where you’re having your party.

Or you can put small individual heart-shaped bowls at each place setting with a serving of snack mix inside.

I love this larger wood heart-shaped serving bowl too.

If you’re giving this Valentine’s trail mix out at a party, these Valentine’s treat boxes or these Valentine’s cellophane bags are an easy way to package them.

How to Send the Snack Mix as a Valentine’s Care Package

Extra large Chinese takeout boxes with Valentine's themed patterns.

I made this snack mix to send as a Valentine’s Day care package for my kids in college.

These XL Valentine’s treat boxes from Walmart were the perfect container to package the mix.

If you prefer shopping from Amazon, these large Valentine’s treat boxes are another great option.

Since the mix lasts longer when it’s in an airtight package, I put a gallon-sized Ziploc bag inside the box, then scooped the mix into the bag and sealed it before sending it off.

Snack Mix Variations

Make it sweeter: Want to make this snack mix extra sweet? Drizzle it with white chocolate and add some Valentine’s Day sprinkles too!
Make it more savory:
Reduce the amount of candy and add more salty treats like white cheddar popcorn, or white cheddar goldfish crackers. You can also add mixed salted nuts, or sesame sticks.
Make it healthier: Ditch the candy and opt for sweet mix-ins like freeze-dried strawberries, unsweetened dried cherries, or strawberry cereal
