10 Patriotic Home Decor Ideas to Make Your Home Look Festive

As Memorial Day approaches, now is the perfect time to break out your patriotic home decor! We’re sharing 10 ideas you can use to display the stars and stripes in your home plus some ways to add some red, white, and blue accents using vintage finds.

For most of my life, decorating for Memorial Day and the 4th of July consisted of hanging an American flag on the front of my house.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the simplicity of displaying the flag!

But I’ve always loved driving past homes festooned with buntings and other patriotic decorations.

Last year, I dipped my toe in the water and gave my front porch a patriotic makeover for summer.

This year? AnnMarie has inspired me to sprinkle some red, white, and blue all over my home!

But I wanted to do it in a way that still coordinated with my vintage-loving, country chic style.

I can’t wait to show you all around!

Two Ways to Decorate a Door for July 4th

Front porch decorated for Memorial Day and July 4th with bunting and flags.

Last year, I used a wreath that had red, white, and blue flowers on it on my front door.

It was pretty, and I’ve used it somewhere else on my porch this year.

I opted for a more subtle look this year and just tucked a few 4×6 American flags into my greenery wreath.

Why did I make the change?

Because I added large buntings on my railings, plus one above my door!

It’s easy to go overboard, so sticking with a simple wreath helped to keep me in check.

When you come inside, you’ll see I added a hanging basket to the inside of my door filled with faux white hydrangea stems and some larger 8×12 flags.

I considered hanging this basket outside, but didn’t want it to get moldy.

It’s an antique basket that I got on a trip to Gatlinburg last fall and I really love it!

Even though my front porch is fairly deep and the door is protected from rain, I’ve still had things get those little black mildew/mold spots when I’ve left them outside.

This basket is pretty old, so I don’t feel comfortable using any harsh cleaners on it to remove those spots if I want to display it inside in the future.

Plus, I love having a little something on the inside of the door!

Simple Patriotic Front Entry

When you come through my front door, you’ll be in a small foyer hallway.

There’s a good chance my old lady kitty, Bella, will be there to greet you because she’s friendly like that!

There’s a large gallery wall with photos of my kids through the years on the larger wall.

And the short wall by the stairs is home to an antique sewing machine cabinet that I found for $35.

It’s a great place to add some seasonal decorating.

I found this antique fishing creel basket a few years ago, and tucked some lambs ear stems inside.

To add some height to this patriotic vignette, I put twelve 8×12 flags in a vintage enamelware bucket.

Funny story: I was super excited about finding this pot because it has a lid and a really great curvy shape.

When I brought it home, my husband commented, “wow, my grandparents had one just like this for us to use at night before they had the indoor plumbing installed.”

Ugh.

So it’s possible my pretty enamelware bucket was actually a chamber pot at one point…

I gave it a good cleaning and am going to try not to think about it too much! LOL

How to Display a Collection of Milk Glass Vases

Transitional family room with coffered ceilings and a gas fireplace decorated with milk glass vases and American flags.

Okay, so by this point, you may be noticing a theme in my patriotic home decor: mini American flags!

I may need an intervention…

But they’re such a simple and affordable way to add some red, white, and blue.

I debated tea staining them to make them more vintagey, but I really like their bright and cheerful colors.

After all, while I love adding vintage decorating finds, my overall style tends to be more light and bright.

I folded up an antique quilt front from my mom with patriotic colors and displayed it in a crate on the hearth with some extra throw pillows.

Textiles like throw blankets and throw pillow covers are an easy way to add some patriotic home decor to your living space.

Then, I pulled out my collection of milk glass vases and used them to display the mini flags on my mantel.

I’ve been having so much fun collecting milk glass, and my goal is to not have any duplicate patterns!

There are a lot of patterns that I see over and over, but the hunt for a unique design makes the collecting that much more fun.

To give the fireplace mantle more visual weight, I anchored the ends of the display with faux boxwood topiaries.

How to Use Old Baseballs in Your Summer Decor

Vintage Coca Cola crates are a little piece of Americana that work well with my patriotic summer theme.

I love that this one doesn’t have any dividers inside so it’s easy to use it like a tray on my coffee table.

An architectural star makes it feel a little patriotic, and then I added something that’s as American as apple pie: old baseballs.

Baseball has been a huge part of my life with my husband who pitched for Viginia Tech!

For years, summer revolved around baseball when he was a coach on my son’s travel baseball team.

I miss those family trips to tournaments, and days spent at a baseball field.

Fortunately, my husband kept two large buckets of old baseballs in the garage so I’m incorporating them into my summer decorating!

How I Decorated My Built-in Shelves for Summer

Builtin shelves decorated for summer with greenery, basket of vintage baseballs, and US flags.

I filled an old square wire basket with more balls to display on the built-in entertainment shelves in the family room.

They’re a nice break from my assorted faux greenery that I have displayed in a variety of containers like baskets, a dough bowl, and some ironstone.

I love the warmth and texture they add to the white shelves.

Of course, I tucked a couple of mini flags in along with the baseballs, because why not?

There are more shelves on the opposite side of the TV, and I added some faux white viburnum to a mason jar with a few more mini flags.

Beside the vase is my husband’s old baseball glove holding one of the dirty old baseballs.

If you want to use baseballs in your summer decorating too, but don’t have a stash of old ones in your garage, you might want to reach out to local youth leagues and see if they have any that they’re no longer using.

Or you can pick them up on Etsy.

I hope you enjoyed taking a look around my entryway and family room and are inspired to add some patriotic decorating accents in your home this summer!

It’s such a great way to show your love of where we live and to celebrate the freedoms we have.
